NICA: Northwest Intentional Communities Association
What we do
Bi-Annual Communities Gatherings: In the winter and summer we organize communities’ gatherings. These gatherings provide opportunities for communities to meet each other, talk about similarities and differences, and share our community experiences and learning's with each other. The events are not designed to be promotional although community seekers are welcome and do typically attend.
Monthly Events: Since 2006 we have been sponsoring monthly educational and outreach events at various locations in the Seattle area in an attempt to respond to both perceived need and direct requests from community members (which we whole-heartedly welcome!) Some of the areas we have recently focused on include: Danish cohousing design; co-creating traditions within community; consensus building; intentional communities and the sustainability movement; group facilitation training; and the role of the elder in community.
The Northwest Intentional Communities Association was formed by a coalition of intentional communities in the fall of 1992 following the Sustainable Communities Conference, spearheaded by John Affolter of the Teramanto community, that was held in West Seattle at Camp Long. The first meeting of NICA was held in the spring of 1993 at the Wesleyan community on Vashon Island, at which time the bylaws and articles of incorporation were ratified. We incorporated in the Fall of 1993 as a Washington State non-profit. We were involved in the 1993 Fellowship for Intentional Communities Celebration of Communities gatherings and have held summer gatherings ever since. We began publishing a small newsletter in the Fall of 1992, and we successfully became a 501c3 tax exempt organization in 1997.
We recently shifted from a membership-based organization to a donor-based organization. The events we are currently involved in either organizing or sponsoring we hope reflect that approach and the important role both community and intention play in our global future.
Come join a group of terrific people and help plan events and work on various projects! If you have an idea for a project or want to help us in our mission, please contact Ken at 206-755-9578 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Intentional Community Resources
Much of the resource information generated by NW Intentional Communities has been consolidated into the FIC website and can be found at wiki.ic.org/wiki/NICA
Our income comes from donations that are solicited at various events. We get major donations as well since we are a 501- c –3 organization and donations are tax deductible!
