North Seattle Co-Op Community House (forming)
Seattle , Washington
Posted On 4/30/2012, Last Updated On 4/30/2012
Looking for a place to live?
Want more than just a room for rent?

I am looking to form an urban co-op house in North Seattle and looking for interested people and a house for rent to call home.

Ideally we're combining an intentional community style of living with a co-op framework. We live and support each other under one roof, have regular house meetings to work out any kinks, stay on the same page, and plan out our community house activities.

We don't do everything together though ;p
Everyone has their own space/room and privacy.

If you support and seek out these values
you will feel at home.

- Sustainable living
- Self-sufficiency
- A nurturing environment
- An affordable place to call home.

Brief Overview:
- Located in North Seattle
- Garden space
- Outside work space area
- Shared meals and activities,
as well as cleaning and property maintenance work.

Please check out our informative website for more information.

We are interested in sharing our lives (and the beautiful 20 acres we live on) w/ several others (homeschooling families, single parents welcome) w/ a true passion for awareness, authenticity, sincere personal development, healing, compassion, integrity, invention and responsible, straightforward behavior. By ‘responsible’ we don’t mean unplayful or overly serious, but dependable. One large home on the property where we currently live complete w/ attached greenhouse. All facilities of the home & main spaces to be shared; other facilities, spaces can be constructed, w/ composting toilet and bathhouse priority. Also a large garage/barn w/ an enclosed woodshop area, & a high-ceilinged boathouse that can be converted. 2 Mongolian yurts available on a first-come basis would require insulation, floor & stove. Original owner put 30 years into soil development, compost building; large garden spaces that we are slowly reviving; many thriving herbs & perennials. Small orchard w/ excellent production. Diverse forest frequented by plethora of birds including eagles, ravens, turkeys, geese, hummingbirds – very vibrant with life here! Peace is tangible. Goal is to continue w/ building into a healing, spiritually-focused space for developing connected Soul Tribe. (Lots of great reasons for intentional living; foremost for us is Union w/ Self & Others). Intention is to quickly develop community businesses and food production so all adults can devote themselves to personal, collective & land development. Part-time employment may be required to meet your necessities in meantime; but open to working w/ resonate energies. Ideal respondents would have an RV, bus or desire to live in a traditional yurt, at least initially.

We are located in the Pacific Northwest halfway between Eugene and Corvallis, Oregon.

We are seeking those who desire to live simply, splitting all living expenses including rent and utilities. Separate living quarters can be made available sharing both kitchen and laundry facilities. Joint ownership will also be considered.

Would like to live with those already living close to nature who realize that the "business as usual" mentality is gone and won't be coming back. They will share our great respect for nature and know that without it we can't and won't survive. Ideal partners are those who can communicate face to face, who share our concerns of climate change, resource depletion and collapse of the current system, as we know it.

One of our goals is to develop a way of generating income that will benefit everyone involved. In considering our homestead, we appreciate people who can work well with others and who enjoy finding better ways of utilizing our property, (ie: water conservation, intensive sustainable planting, composting and organic planting). Skills such as animal husbandry, herbalist, carpentry, renewable energy, and sewing will be welcomed additions to what we have already.

Our property is five acres, all usable with a gently sloped southern exposure and 55 4x26' raised beds, approximately 250' of berries. We also have a young orchard of apple and pear trees.

Pets- Already at full capacity with one dog and cat.

Our lovely "White House," a 1,500 sqft, five-bedroom, recently-remodelled heritage house (from the 1880s) on a 43 acre collaborative farm site, is now available. It is currently sparsely furnished, or that can all go away if you want to bring your own.

(Photos at: http://www.ecoreality.org/pix/20100302%20White%20House/)

You could live here for some combination of monthly cash, equity investment, and/or work, using all or part of the house, as needed. The market rental value for this house is $1,500 per month; we suggest $750/month plus 80 hours of co-op-related work.

We really want people in this house who will collaborate with us on various sustainable food and energy projects, rather than simply a cash rental. The house is on a path between another house and fields and out-buildings; if you are looking for privacy and seclusion, this is not for you. (Although you can easily hike to seclusion in the thousands of acres of wild public parkland behind the co-op property.)

Income opportunities include lodging WWOOFers and other sustainable agricultural revenue sources -- bring ideas!

Our small number of permanent residents are already supplying their own food (in gross measure), and are working toward being energy independent, as well. You can learn about and be involved with: Permaculture, chickens, goats, market farming, orcharding, greenhouse propagation operations, medicinal herbs, biodiesel production, humanure systems, educational programs and events, and much more.
