Newberry House
Portland, Oregon,
United States
This is a small "simplified cohousing" community.
We are a small community on seven acres, 20 minutes from the center of Portland. Each person has a small detached cabin for personal space, and we all share a common house containing kitchen, living, dining, guest room, office, entertainment space, yoga/meditation space, a library, and other space. The land is sloped, mostly forest with orchard, open space, and garden space.
Principles include: 1. Committed to sustainable living; 2. Simpler (not poorer) living; 3. Living interdependently enough that life is easier and richer through cooperation, balanced with sufficient privacy; and 4. Honoring the land.
Expenses, and effort to care for the land, home and garden are shared; income is not. We share food costs and buy mostly organic food, and we share some cooking. The flavor of the place is somewhat pagan, down to earth, queer, accepting, less developed, less costly, and less middle class than most co-housing. It's a home that provides a foundation for our lives in the world.
This community is several years old, and there are opportunities to become a co-owner.
