H.W. Flesher Housing Cooperative is a community of people with shared responsibility for each other, our homes, and our neighbourhood.
Our community consists of 100 units, on 4.5 landscaped acres, each with a private entrance door leading directly to the outside.
Five of our units are modified to accommodate various disabilities and many of our units are unique, with beautiful views, peaked ceilings, and two patios.
The design has cleverly left ample room for spacious patios and green space where neighbors will often meet.
The location is ideal for access to anywhere in the Vancouver lower mainland, with quick access to transit routes or highway routes, and 20 minutes from the airport.
As our main social event, we have an annual barbecue complete with entertainment, dancing, and open stage. At Halloween the Co-op gathers after trick-or-treating for fireworks and hot chocolate; the children vote this as our most popular event.
The sense of community and belonging that is created from these events—and our regular general meetings—is essential for living in a growing cosmopolitan city like Vancouver, BC.
Our little village—as we like to think of it—has developed committees on which to volunteer that suit all interests. As participation is required in the Co-op, there are many committees to chose from, such as Maintenance, Landscaping, Social, Finance, Board of Directors, Membership, Newsletter, and Special needs, to name a few.
Volunteering on these committees has enhanced many members’ lives and has required people to meet and know their neighbours and thereby accomplish a safe and secure living environment.
We do not have regular vacancies; they come sporadically and are filled by our interviewed potential members, based on the family size and unit size. A real home is worth waiting for!
