| Mountain Homestead (MH) is expanding its horizons from being a small rural homestead to being part of a thriving, vibrant community integrated into an ever-expanding village of ecological culture spiraling outward in demonstration and inspiration towards a world looking for change.
In 2010, we will begin consturction of the Nut House, a home in amidst our demonstration Permaculture Zone 4 Nut and Coppice Forest. The building project is offered as a 3 month long Permaculture Building Intensive, June-September, consisting of a 6 person building crew, learning permaculture and natural building through hands-on experience.
In 2007, we bought an adjacent 35-acre parcel for the purpose of reselling it to a like-minded person. We'd like to break even on it, asking $215,000. The parcel has a county-approved house site, a year-round creek running through the middle of it, and town utilities to the boundary. Three sides border large forest landholdings. We'd very much like a new neighbor with whom we can build a sustainable culture.
Currently, we own 400 acres of land on the edge of the city of Coquille (pop. 4000), at the edge of the fertile Coquille River Valley. Our land is all zoned Forest, meaning one legal dwelling per 160 acres. Bordering our land to the west, towards Coquille, are smaller rural-residential lots, with one adjacent six-acre lot still for sale. On the north, we border 400 acres of BLM-managed forest and 300 acres of forestland owned by the city of Coquille that includes the city reservoir. To the east and south, we border thousands of acres of forest owned by Roseburg Forest Products. Thirty-five acres of our land are leased to the Cob Cottage Company (CCC), which operates the North American School for Natural Building on the site, teaching hundreds of people from all over the world natural building and ecological gardening through workshops, work parties, and apprenticeships since 2001.
Our land is protected by a conservation easement with the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, which means it will stay forested forever and never get sub-developed or divided, regardless of future ownership. | |

Mountain Homestead welcomes you to come for a visit to experience the land and our lifestyle, and to get to know us. You'll get a tour of our land, our land that is for sale, and the adjoining parcels that are for sale. All we ask is participation in our day-to-day activities, which include projects, maintenance, upkeep, and our weekly community meeting. During this week we get to know each other and see if we make a good match for our worktrade program.
Participate in a Cob Cottage Company Workshop:
The Cob Cottage Company has been holding workshops here since 2001, attracting people from all over the globe. They offer 10-day Basics of Cob workshops and three-week Complete Cob workshops, as well as apprenticeships for course graduates. See their website for more info: www.cobcottage.com |
