Forming
Unity Elder Commune
Portland, Oregon,
United States
(no physical address yet. will be in Washington county, oregon)
I am starting a community for the aging. It will be in Washington County, Oregon. Members will be required to help each other to the best of their ability. All members will need only minimal care. Able-bodied caretakers will be present but will not be full-time caregivers. The community will be wheelchair and walker accessible. It will be geared more for those who cannot afford traditional adult-care homes. Daily activities will be offered. Basically, it will be a community where you can age gracefully and give help to your neighbor—a place you can call home, and where your neighbor is your family. Maybe the person next door will need someone to assist with his or her socks or need help getting out of bed. Maybe you could prepare a meal or two. Group meals will be provided three times a day. Food costs will be included in membership dues. Members will be approved through an in-person interview and voted in by other members. Pets will be allowed. The community is in its beginning stages. Operation is projected for February 2009. A waiting list is already in existence.
