Dorothy Day House - Portland Catholic Worker
Portland, Oregon,
United States
Dorothy Day House, aka the Portland Catholic Worker, is located in inner southeast Portland, at Saint Francis Parish. We're a small, nonviolent community of gentle anarchists, Christian and otherwise, that provide hospitality for people who would otherwise be experiencing homelessness. We're also involved in activism on the local level. All the Catholic Workers currently have to be employed outside the house to some extent, in order to carry fair share of our obligation to the parish (we live in a large house on the campus, a former rectory). We're established, but we just started having evening meals together, and so forth. There's a lot of work to do in terms of building community, but here we are. Regarding the "discrimination," we are a house of hospitality for homeless women. As far as potential workers are concerned, we aren't opposed to kids per se, or pregnant women. Any age, gender, trans or passing, sexuality, et cetera, is of course welcome.
