WindSong Cohousing Community
Langley, British Columbia,
Canada
WindSong Cohousing, in Langley, British Columbia, is about 40 km east of Vancouver in the southwestern corner of Canada. The surrounding area, formerly a farming community, is now a residential suburb laced with many creeks and streams flowing into the nearby Fraser River.
WindSong has 34 townhomes along a pedestrian street covered by glass, making it ideal for easy access to the common house and for neighbourly interaction in all kinds of weather. Our 5,500-sq-ft common house includes underground parking, a large kitchen and dining room, a performance stage, fireside lounge, and patio. Other spaces are dedicated for guests, teens, play, arts and crafts, laundry, office, consultation, washrooms, multi-purpose use, and workshop. WindSong is well-served by schools, parks, walking trails, public transportation, and nearby commercial amenities.
Our site includes four acres of undeveloped forest, field, and wetland, including a salmon-bearing stream. Our surrounding shared gardens include organic lawns, flowers, fruit trees and raised vegetable beds, children’s swings, and secluded reading areas. Our property is also home to a wide variety of birds, squirrels and raccoons. About half of our homes have small private yards.
We are a mixed community of families and singles, young and old, with a diversity of income levels. We do most of our community administration, cleaning, and maintenance through a participatory Community Contribution System, and we make our decisions by consensus.
