Yarrow EcoVillage from the south
The twenty-five-acre (10 hectare) former dairy farm in Chilliwack, British Columbia, consists of two hectares (five acres) zoned "Ecovillage" and eight hectares (twenty acres) of agricultural land.
We are creating an ecovillage of up to 40 homes with stores, cottage industries, and an organic farm. Ownership and governance is through a cooperative known as the Yarrow EcoVillage Society. Decisions are made by consensus.
Our sustainable community is grounded in permaculture principles. Funds are raised through membership equity, investment shares, and revenue from on-site activities. Costs will be met through sweat equity and cash payment.
The members are a diverse group with many skills. There are now over 30 members and associates.
Members make decisions on all aspects of the ecovillage. A membership share is $1,000 for community members and $10,000 for homeowners. Individuals not yet in a position to become members may become associates ($200 fee). This fee can later be put toward full membership. Members contribute $20 per month to a maximum of $300. Members may purchase investment shares in increments of $100. Investment shares are the primary means of building equity in the project. Members may also earn sweat equity credits towards a future home or business in the community.
The cooperative is open to new members.
